The Groups and People Who Make Worship Happen
There are a number of groups
and individuals who make
worship of the Triune God possible at the Cathedral.
While everyone who arrives for worship is a "participant" in worship, there are leaders who take on special roles before, during
and after the service.
Worship Leaders
- Acolytes -- Serving as Torch, Banner and Crucifer carriers, these older children and youth lead processions and help orient worshippers to different changes in the flow of the liturgy.
- Chalice Bearers -- These individuals serve the Chalice during Communion or the Eucharist.
- Choir -- A group of highly gifted vocalists, the choir, led by Cathedral Musician Albert Melton, provide choral leadership throughout the liturgy, but also offer another means of prayer and praise through their anthems.
- Clergy -- Dean, Assistant and Deacons lead the service by directing congregation in the parts of the liturgy, reading the Gospel, celebrating the Eucharist and dismissing us back into the world.
- Lectors -- These talented readers present the lectionary readings for each week. The variety of voices and readings allows hearers to approach God's Word in different ways.
- Ushers -- Often unnoticed, the Ushers are the backbone of the service as they direct the congregation in seating, presenting the offerings and taking Communion.
- Vergers -- These men, women and youth in black direct worship leaders and take care to pay attention to all "behind the scenes" aspects of the liturgy, such as lighting a baptismal candle, helping a deacon set the Table, or refilling the Chalice as needed. Vergers also work with the Altar Guild to prepare the Church for worship.
Worship Preparation
- Altar Guild -- While you may not see them, you know they have been actively preparing the sanctuary for worship. The Altar Guild cares for liturgical accoutrements of the Cathedral, changes colors of the Table vestments according the season, stocks Eucharist supplies (bread and wine), polishes the silver and brass, and provides general love and care for God's House.
- Flower Guild -- Most weeks, the Flower Guild exhibits its flower arrangements on the high altar. They coordinated with people who would like to remember a loved one by arranging flowers of their choice and in keeping with the liturgical season. The Flower Guild offers a degree of beauty and celebration to our weekly worship times.
