A Description of Taize

Taize Services at Saint Luke's

Wednesdays at 5:30pm in Emmanuel Chapel September through June

Taize resumes Wednesday, September 10th

An ecumenical Taize service takes place weekly in Emmanuel Chapel. Taize, a Protestant, monastic community in Taize, France, formed after World War II, is dedicated to reconciliation between peoples and to fostering unity within the church. To learn more about the Taize community, please visit their website at www.taize.fr.

Services are composed of candlelight, icons, short readings, periods of silence and contemplative chants. Services run for about 45 minutes. All are welcome.

Brother Roger, the former Prior of the Taize Community, wrote,

"Song is one of the most essential elements of worship. Short chants repeated again and again, give it a contemplative character. Using just a few words, they express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. And these simple songs then enable us to keep on praying when we are alone, by night and by day, sometimes in the silence of our hearts when we are at work."
